How to Change a Flat Tire

Getting a flat tire in Santa Clara is no holiday, and it can throw your entire schedule off track and even leave you stranded if you don’t have the know-how or tools to do your own flat tire change. All good drivers should understand how to do a basic tire change in case the emergency arises, especially if you don’t have a cell phone handy or a number to call.

1. First put the vehicle in park on a level surface. You don’t want your car rolling away while you’re in the middle of the change.
2. Place the car jack right behind the tire well of the flat tire if it’s a front tire, or place it in front of the tire well if it’s a rear tire. There is usually a notch you can feel in the frame in the spot where the jack should be placed.

3. Keep the jack level and raise it until firmly in place. Don’t lift the car just yet; you want to make sure the jack is level and stable, then use the wrench to loosen the lug nuts on the tire.

4. Slowly raise the jack all the way up and remove the lug nuts. If the jack starts to wobble or looks tilted as you raise it, immediately lower it and reposition it.

5. Remove the damaged tire and replace it with your spare. When you place the spare on the axle, make sure it is firmly in place before tightening the lug nuts on with your fingers.

6. Lower the jack until the tire touches the ground. At this point, now use the wrench to finish tightening the lug nuts. Don’t tighten them in a row, but go every-other to ensure proper balance and fit.

7. Fully lower and remove the jack and you are on your way!

8. Take your damaged tire into a tire shop for flat tire repair. A flat tire doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to buy a new one; many damaged tires can be repaired for minimal costs. If it’s too damaged, though, the shop will walk you through the process of purchasing a new tire for your vehicle.

Knowing how to change your own tire can be helpful, but many things factor in: having the right tools, how many flat tires you have, if you have a spare, if the tire is rusted on, if you have the strength for the job, if you’re wearing clothes you can’t soil, etc. In case anything doesn’t go according to plan, it’s important to have the number of an emergency roadside assistance company like Towing Santa Clara. They can do a quick flat tire change for you so that you don’t have to deal with the mess and the struggle, and if necessary they can provide efficient, effective tow truck service. And with their 24/7 roadside assistance, you can rely on them no matter what hour the flat happens. Remember Towing Santa Clara so that you don’t have to panic next time a flat tire gets in your way.
